Ring Around the Drug Store

January 31st, 2006 @ 0107 hours (Big-Ticket Items)
by Doc Syn

My good friend Mary asked me a question that reminded me of something. She said to me, “Did you ever replace your wedding band you lost?” So, for those of you who read about the day I was relieved of my wedding band, and wondered what ever came of my ringless finger, I will tell you.

The Missing Link

January 28th, 2006 @ 1709 hours (* Site News)
by Doc Syn

I didn’t know it, but apparently WordPress puts in a snippet of code by default that keeps Google from following any links put in comments, including the link that people provide to their home page.

This can be bad. Let’s say, in some paralell universe, I have a popular site with Google’s highest ranking. One of my friends comments on something I say. The link to his site won’t help his site become popular because Google won’t follow it. This is, suffice it to say, a strong disincentive to bother commenting, since the linking merry-go-round stops at my front door.

So, I used a hack I found to remove this unfortunate little feature. After all, I’ve had 100% success keeping the spam-commenters out, so why not spread what little PageRank wealth I have to those who bother to read my site, right?

Links to external sites will now be followed by Google.

I wonder how many different blogging engines have this little quirk.

Beer and Goading in New Jersey

January 28th, 2006 @ 0303 hours (Big-Ticket Items)
by Doc Syn

In other words, the long-awaited narrative of our road-trip to New Jersey.

So, there was a wedding in New Jersey.

I was not acquainted with either the bride or the groom. I do not live in New Jersey. I only knew one person who lived in New Jersey. I’d never been to New Jersey. I’d never had a particular desire to travel to New Jersey.

This, of course, explains why I found myself there.

Feeding the Animals

January 18th, 2006 @ 0115 hours (* Site News)
by Doc Syn

Hmm. At some point, maybe when I updated to WordPress 2.0, my RSS/Atom feeds all broke. I think I’ve fixed all but the RSS v0.92, and I’m not sure what the problem is. I might dump that feed altogether, don’t know yet.

From what I can tell, the method for getting good RSS for those feeds changed somehow when I updated to WordPress v2.0. Tweaking the RSS v2.0 feeds accordingly helped, but v0.92 is still screwed.

If someone with more knowledge out there is reading, a pointer or two would not be taken amiss.

Until I find out that there is in fact a doctor in the house, I guess I’ll keep sniffing around until I figure it out myself.

Bear with me.

Update, 0140 hours

I figured it out. For whatever reason, feed readers have the potential to get very angry if you have the audacity to use an ampersand (the “and” symbol) in a post.

Especially if you use the proper HTML code to represent it, so as to avoid confusing the browser.

To quote a wise man, “G’nite, New York!”

There will be an update. . .

January 16th, 2006 @ 2138 hours (* Site News)
by Doc Syn

. . . about my trip to New Jersey.

I promise.

Right now, I’m trying to catch up on everything else. I hope you all had a good time:

  • Listening to sermons
  • Reading “news”paper articles
  • Being lectured to by the talking heads

. . . about Dr. Martin Luther King, Junior. I know I didn’t. No, I don’t mean I didn’t have a good time. I mean I didn’t have any of that crap happen to me.

It was perfect.

The only time I turned on the TV was Sunday night, to check the weather report for the drive back up. I glanced at headlines to check the final score of the Steelers-Lions game. The radio stayed off because I will never switch it from my favorite AM station, and my speakers rattle at the slightest hint of bass, so FM was out.

I was totally out of touch with everything but the trip.

Rock.

Where the Rubber Meets the Road

January 13th, 2006 @ 0139 hours (Big-Ticket Items)

When it comes to travel, I’m something of a walking contradiction. My city-dwelling friends think that a 20-minute ride to work is a bit of a drive. I think of a 90 minute drive to see them is a bit of a drive. At the same time, in my life, I’ve Traveled (and yes, that’s with a capital “T”) to:

  • Mexico, by plane (16 years ago)
  • Michigan, by plane (9 or 10 years ago)
  • Baltimore, by car (several times 1997-2002)

That’s it. When it comes to going places, I’m sort of a Hobbit. I spent one year delivering pizzas all over the damn city, learned the side-streets like the back of my hand, but I don’t think that counts.

My Puppet Show

January 10th, 2006 @ 2330 hours (Deep Thoughts)
by Doc Syn

For a little while now I’ve been putting the occasional funny little snippets of my life under the heading of, “No, Don’t Laugh.” I named it that because I like to make people laugh; nothing makes me laugh than being shown something vaguely funny and then being told not to laugh at it, so I figured the name was appropriate. Just today, however, I decided to name it, “Puppet Show.” If you’re actually bored enough to be curious, here’s my roundabout way of explaining why. . .

No Poking Zone

January 10th, 2006 @ 1729 hours (Relationships)
by Doc Syn

Okay, the wife has been working with toddlers for way, way, way too long. I had thought that my sense of humor was warping itself to resemble that of my employer. I figured that finishing his jokes — or, worse, telling them before he had a chance to get a breath to start — was bad enough. This, this takes the cake.Oh — before I start, honey, I’m not saying you’re an immature brat. I’m saying that, after spending so much time with brats, especially after a long, long day up to your armpits in brats, that you’re bound to get a little loopy.

I just had no idea how loopy.

Living In Apolitical World

January 5th, 2006 @ 0058 hours (Politics)
by Doc Syn

A friend of mine recently asked me why my blog doesn’t have a more political tone. There are two major reasons:

  • There are too many political blogs for me to bother trying to compete on Google.
  • I prefer to save such rantings for Political Pagan, where I’ll actually have an audience.
  • This is where I sit and scratch my nuts. It’s about destressing more than making a statement.

Yes, that’s three reasons. I can count. I said two major reasons. One of them isn’t really all that important.  At any rate, in case you’re curious about my political views, I’ll take this opportunity to express in a few short sentances what many others dedicate entire blogs to explaining.
